World Laboratory Day

When the invisible takes center stage for a day

For twenty years now, scientists around the world have been honored on April 23rd for their contribution to the progress of humankind.

This day was initiated by the World Health Organization in 1950 - in memory of the British physicist and chemist Sir William Lawrence Bragg. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in the year 1915 for his work in X-ray crystallography, thus setting a milestone in medicine and research.

Today, the first makeshift laboratories of the 17th century have developed into high-tech, controlled facilities. These modern laboratories and their staff are essential for the development of new medicines and technologies. They make an enormous contribution towards the protection of public health and the environment.

Our human ingenuity and constant curiosity about the unknown and unexplored has given rise to laboratories in the most extraordinary places in the world.

  • CERN – the largest laboratory with a size of 5.5 square kilometers across two countries (France & Switzerland)
  • Antarctica – the only continent with more laboratories than religious sites
  • Aquarius – the only underwater laboratory at a depth of approx. 19 m in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Florida
  • International Space Station (ISS) – the most expensive and most distant laboratory from Earth at an altitude of approx. 400 km
  • Sir Joseph John Thomson's discovery of the electron in 1897 was decisive for particle analysis

As one of the leading membrane manufacturers in asbestos, microplastics and particle analysis, our coated i3 TrackPor membranes also build on the numerous scientific breakthroughs of recent years. The track-etched filters are manufactured, tested and packaged by hand with the utmost care in our cleanroom factory in Radeberg.

The team at i3 Membrane wishes all scientists a happy World Laboratory Day! Your work today lays the foundation for the inventions of tomorrow.
