Medical sterile filtration
Nurses, hygiene experts and doctors face the very serious challenge presented by the propagation of gram-negative, pathogenic germs practically impossible to handle without a comprehensive prevention concept.
Drinking water represents a considerable infection reservoir in medical facilities. It was possible to demonstrate how water can be determined as a causal reservoir for up to 50 percent of nosocomial infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa in intensive care units and drinking water installations should be regarded as a relevant but as yet underestimated infection reservoir for Pseudomonas aeruginosa.¹
In a current study, it was possible to detect Pseudomonas aeruginosa in 8% (11/136) of water tapping points examined on a liver transplant ward. Following installation of point-of-use filters, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, legionella and mycobacteria could no longer be detected in tap water samples. Additionally, the colonization/infection rate caused by gram-negative rod-shaped bacteria was reduced by 47%.²
Sterile water filtration has steadily established itself as a pillar of prevention over the past 15 years.3, 4
Safe sterile filters for use at the tap and shower should satisfy the following criteria:
- Secure retention of germs, detection of 7 Log Brevundimonas diminuta per cm² filter area
- Laminar water flow at the outlet point to prevent splashback
- The water jet should not hit the siphon directly
- Bacteriostatic additive in the plastic of the housing to prevent the formation of biofilm5
- Small and compact design to ensure easy use.
i3 Membrane has used the requirements formulated and 15 years of experience in this area to develop a very compact and efficient sterile filter featuring ion-supported technology. It is manufactured as a disposable product using modern pharmaceutical production methods. Thanks to its small and compact design, it is superior to the multiple-use system from an ecological perspective.
With the certified quality management system in accordance with DIN EN ISO 13485 and in its capacity as a manufacturer of medical products, i3 Membrane complies with the high demands on safety and reliability of its products and services as well as minimization of the risks associated with its products.
