"Water is life. It is the healthiest and most important nutrient." It is not without reason that we chose these opening words for one of our films, and as an introduction to the topic of successful and sustainable infection prevention*. It is also precisely the reason why we so highly appreciate World Water Day.
Initiated by the UN, it has been held on an annual basis on March 22 of every year since 1993 and is intended to underscore the importance of water as the basis of life, while increasing awareness about why we should treat this resource – that we tend to take for granted – with care. The topics range from careful use and quality protection to critical issues and tasks that need to be addressed at global and political levels.
Regardless of the level at which the various objectives need to be tackled, they first have to be introduced and draw the attention of society at large. Everyone can make a contribution, no matter how small. Every single step in the right direction is worth taking.
This year World Water Day is themed "Groundwater", and several projects are taking place in this regard. Viva con Agua is right at the forefront and is once again calling for a worldwide Run4WATER.
And in order to make provide it with visibility, Heidelberg University is providing this hidden treasure with a podium at its International World Water Day Online Conference.
This list could go on and on. We are thoroughly impressed by the nature and scope of the many campaigns that have been initiated on this occasion!
